AngloGold Ashanti Limited (New York Stock Exchange)

AngloGold Ashanti Limited AngloGold Ashanti Limited (AngloGold Ashanti), incorporated in 1944, is a global producer of gold. AngloGold Ashanti has 21 operations and a number of exploration programs in gold-producing regions of the world. During the year ended December 31, 2008, the Company produced 4.98 million ounces of gold from its operations. AngloGold Ashanti’s main product is gold. Revenue is also derived from the sales of silver, uranium oxide and sulphuric acid. The Company sells its products on international markets. In December 2008, AngloGold Ashanti completed the purchase of Sao Bento Gold Company Limited and its wholly owned subsidiary, Sao Bento Mineracao S.A. from Eldorado Gold Corporation. Effective July 1, 2008, the Company acquired Golden Cycle Gold Corporation. As a result, AngloGold Ashanti indirectly acquired 100% ownership of Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company. In June 2008, Constellation Energy Group announced that its subsidiary, Constellation Energy Commodities Group Limited, acquired 100% of the shares of Nufcor International Limited (Nufcor) from AngloGold Ashanti Limited and FirstRand International Limited. On January 14, 2008, AngloGold Ashanti announced the execution of an agreement and plan of merger in order to acquire 100% of Golden Cycle Gold Corporation, thus owning 100% of Cripple Creek & Victor.

South Africa

AngloGold Ashanti’s South Africa region comprises seven underground mines located in two geographic areas on the Witwatersrand Basin: the Vaal River and West Wits operations. The Vaal River operations consist of the Great Noligwa, Kopanang, Moab Khotsong and Tau Lekoa mines.

The primary reefs mined in this region are the Vaal Reef (VR) and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the secondary reef mined is the Crystalkop Reef (C Reef). The West Wits operations are made up of Mponeng, Savuka and TauTona, which are situated near the town of Carletonville. The primary reefs mined are the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) and the VCR. All seven operations are 100%-owned by AngloGold Ashanti. In addition, the Vaal River Surface and West Wits Surface operations mine the waste rock dumps and tailings dams, which result from the mining and processing of the primary and secondary reef horizons. The South African operations are all located in the rocks of the Witwatersrand Basin.

AngloGold Ashanti produces a uranium oxide concentrate (U3O8) as a by-product from its South African gold mining operations. AngloGold Ashanti produces between 550 and 650 tons of U3O8 annually. Great Noligwa is located about 15 kilometers south-east of the town of Orkney, in the southern part of the Klerksdorp goldfield. The mine exploits the VR at depths varying between 1,500 meters and 2,600 meters below surface. Kopanang Mine is located on the farms Pretoriuskraal 53 and Grootdraai 468 in the Free State province, south of the Vaal River and about 10 kilometers south-east of the town of Orkney, which is itself located about 170 kilometers south-west of Johannesburg. Project Zaaiplaats 2 (PZ2) is situated at Moab Khotsong in the Vaal River region of AngloGold Ashanti’s South African operations. Tau Lekoa is located about 8 kilometers west of the town of Orkney, at the western extreme of the Klerksdorp goldfields. The mine exploits the VCR at depths varying between 900 meters and 1,700 meters below surface.

Mponeng lies on the West Wits Line, close to Carletonville in the province of Gauteng, about 65 kilometers south-west of Johannesburg. Mining at Mponeng is conducted at an average depth of 2,800 meters. The Savuka mine is located about 18 kilometers south of the town of Carletonville, in the West Wits goldfields. The mine exploits the CLR at depths varying between 2,600 meters and 3,500 meters below surface. TauTona lies on the West Wits Line, south of Carletonville in the North West Province, about 70 kilometers south-west of Johannesburg. Mining at TauTona takes place at depths ranging from 2,000 meters to 3,640 meters.

Argentina

AngloGold Ashanti has a single operation in Argentina, the Cerro Vanguardia mine, which is a joint venture with Formicruz (the province of Santa Cruz). Cerro Vanguardia is located to the north-west of Puerto San Julian and is situated within the southern Deseado Masive. AngloGold Ashanti has a 92.5% interest in the mine with the province of Santa Cruz holding the remaining 7.5%.

Australia

AngloGold Ashanti owns 100% of Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. AngloGold Ashanti has a 33.33% interest in Boddington with joint venture partner Newmont Mining Corporation holding 66.67%. Boddington Gold Mine is managed by the BGM Management Company Pty Ltd (BGMMCo), which is 100%-owned by Newmont. The Boddington operation is situated approximately 130 kilometers south-east of Perth in Western Australia. The Sunrise Dam lies some 220 kilometers north-north-east of Kalgoorlie and 55 kilometers south of Laverton in Western Australia. The mine, 100% owned by AngloGold Ashanti, comprises an open-pit operation and an underground project. Mining is carried out by contractors and ore is treated in a gravity and leach process plant. The Tropicana gold deposit is located approximately 350 kilometers north-east of Kalgoorlie within the Great Victoria Desert, Western Australia.

Brazil

AngloGold Ashanti’s operations in Brazil comprise the wholly owned AngloGold Ashanti Mineracao and a 50% interest in Serra Grande mines. The AngloGold Ashanti Brasil Mineracao complex is located in the municipalities of Nova Lima, Sabara and Santa Barbara, near the city of Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais in south-eastern Brazil. AngloGold Ashanti Brasil Mineracao (Brasil Mineracao) has mining rights over 61,864 hectares in the state of Minas Gerais in south-eastern Brazil. The Serra Grande joint venture (50% attributable to AngloGold Ashanti) is co-owned with Kinross Gold Corporation. Serra Grande controls, or has an interest in, approximately 21,068 hectares in and around the Crixas mining district in the north-western areas of the Goias State in central Brazil. Serra Grande is located 5 kilometers from the city of Crixas. The operation comprises three underground mines, Mina III, Mina Nova and Mina Palmeiras, and one open pit mine in the outcrop of Mina III (between level 50 and surface).

Colombia

The Gramalote project is located 120 road kilometers west-north-west of Medellin, the capital of the Antioquia department. The Gramalote project is a joint venture with Vancouver-based B2Gold Corp. There are two principal mineralized sectors at Gramalote: Las Torres and Cerro Gramalote. La Colosa project is 100%-owned by AngloGold Ashanti and is located 150 kilometers west of Colombia’s capital city, Bogota and 30 kilometers west of the town, Ibague, in the department of Tolima.

Ghana

AngloGold Ashanti has two mines in Ghana, Obuasi which has both surface and underground operations and Iduapriem, an open pit mine. Obuasi and Iduapriem are both wholly owned by AngloGold Ashanti. The Iduapriem mine is situated in the western region of Ghana, 85 kilometers north of the coastal city of Takoradi, and 10 kilometers south-west of Tarkwa. Its processing facilities include a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. The Iduapriem gold mine is located along the southern end of the Tarkwa basin. The Obuasi mine is located in the Ashanti region of Ghana, some 80 kilometers from Kumasi. It is an underground mine extending over 9 kilometers on strike and mining to a depth of 1,500 meters below surface.

Guinea

The Siguiri mine is AngloGold Ashanti’s operation in the Republic of Guinea. The mine is 85% owned by AngloGold Ashanti and 15% by the government of Guinea. The Siguiri gold mine is situated in the Siguiri district in the north-east of the Republic of Guinea, West Africa, about 850 kilometers from the capital city of Conakry.

Mali

AngloGold Ashanti has interests in three operations in Mali: Sadiola (38%), Yatela (40%) and Morila (40%). The Sadiola and Yatela operations are managed by AngloGold Ashanti, while Randgold Resources Limited manages Morila. The Morila mine is situated some 280 kilometers by road south-east of Bamako, the capital city of Mali. The mine is operated by Morila SA, a joint venture company incorporating Randgold Resources Ltd (40%), Anglogold Ashanti Ltd (40%), and the Government of Mali (20%). Randgold Resources took over the operation of Morila mine from Anglogold Ashanti Ltd in February 2008. Sadiola is situated in the north-west of Mali, 77 kilometers to the south of the regional capital of Kayes. The mining operations take place in five open pits, the Sadiola Main Pit and four satellite pits, namely FE3 Pits 1 to 3 and pit FE4. The Yatela Mine is situated some 25 kilometers north of Sadiola and approximately 50 kilometers south-west of Kayes. The Yatela operation is mining from two open pits, the Yatela Main Pit and the satellite Alamoutala pits.

Namibia

AngloGold Ashanti has one operation in Namibia, the Navachab mine. Navachab gold mine is located 10 kilometers south-west of Karibib and 170 kilometers north-west of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Navachab mine is an open-pit mine.

Tanzania

AngloGold Ashanti has one operation in Tanzania, the Geita Gold Mine. The Geita gold mine is located approximately 910 kilometers from Dar es Salaam in the Lake Zone of northern Tanzania; the tenement is situated within the Sukumaland Greenstone Belt of the Lake Victoria goldfields, which host other gold mines, including Golden Pride, Bulyanhulu, Tulawaka and North Mara.

United States of America

Cripple Creek & Victor (CC&V) is located south-west of Colorado Springs in the state of Colorado in the United States. CC&V is an open-pit operation. The ore is treated using a valley-type, heapleach process with activated carbon used to recover the gold.
